Description
One of the few North American native vines that flowers in shade, Decumaria barbara is a hardy, easy-to-grow climbing hydrangea that produces lots of ethereal flat clusters or unique, honey scented creamy white flowers. Flowers appear in May and June against a dark green background of shiny oval leaves. Unlike some woodland vines the climbing hydrangea maintains full leaf coverage from the ground to the very top of the vine. In fall, the leaves turn a pleasing soft yellow before dropping for the winter.
Fast growing, this beautiful vine climbs up to 5 feet a year to 30 or more feet in height attaching by rootlets to wood, brick and other surfaces. Great for climbing tree trunks!
Decumaria won’t bloom unless it’s climbing, but its foliage makes a lovely and lush groundcover all on its own. Though it tolerates dry periods it’s great for moist Southern gardens with seasonal flooding.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Decumaria barbara is a North American native Climbing Hydrangea that provides wonderful texture and color as a vertical accent in home foundation plantings, on trellises, arbors, pergolas, mailboxes, and up tree trunks. It is ideal for growing along river or stream banks, or on slopes, and is great for use in larger containers situated against a wall or large tree. The vines will trail over the pot and climb the structure creating a unique and interesting feature.
Growing up to 60 feet feet tall, this Decumaria will easily cover a tree trunk or any porous wall or garden structure in the landscape, and it does it quickly. It’s delicate aerial rootlets will cling to just about any surface without causing damage.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 5 feet apart against fences or walls
