Description

If you like the ever-popular Coral Bark Japanese Maple but don’t have room for it, meet ‘Corvallis Broom’, a very dwarf descendant that, as its name suggests, came from a witches’ broom off Acer palmatum ‘Sango Kaku’. As with its parent, Corvallis Broom features the same amazing bright coral-red stems but on a much smaller tree reaching maybe 6 to 8 feet tall at maturity with a very dense crown. It’s smaller stature makes it a perfect fit as a specimen in smaller garden spaces and container gardens. In spring, new leaves emerge a lime green to chartreuse contrasting marvelously with the red stems and branches. The same contrast occurs in fall when the leaves turn bright yellow shades with the arrival of cooler temperatures. After the fall leaf drop the red stems and branches take center stage throughout winter. This true dwarf shines year round in the garden!

Landscape & Garden Uses

To showcase its magnificence and beauty, Corvallis Broom Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape.

Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape or garden space…that is if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing groundcover plants that won’t interfere at all with your tree.

Growing Preferences

Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow in both the ground or in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.

In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.
