Description

A cousin of the white-flowering Tea Olive, the Orange Tea Olive produces the same sweetly fragrant flowers but in a wonderful creamy orange color. Due to the presence of carotenoids in the flowers, some say that the Orange Tea Olive has a more pleasant fragrance than the white. We’ve smelled them both. It might be all in our head, but we think the orange does smell a little sweeter, like candy. There are other subtle differences as well. The leaves of the Orange Tea Olive are a little darker green and are larger and longer than those of white. No need to plant this one near windows as one plant can fill a back or front yard with sweet aroma! That said, of course you can plant one near a window or outdoor living spaces where the fragrance and pretty flowers can be enjoyed from closer up. The flowers of the Orange Tea Olive are edible and also used in perfumes. In China, they use these flowers to scent black or green teas and also use it in perfumery. You’ll see why when you plant one!

Landscape & Garden Uses

With an upright rounded form 10 to 15 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the Orange Tea Olive can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub, its dense foliage makes it ideal for use as an evergreen hedge, privacy screen, or background, or to frame corners or fill voids between widely-spaced windows in home foundation plantings. As this tea olive grows taller, which it does rather quickly, lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree that is ideal for use as a focal point specimen tree in sunny to partially shaded landscape borders and home foundation plantings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, orange theme gardens and Asian gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for a solid hedge; 14 feet or more apart for space between plants

Cultural Preferences

The Orange Tea Olive is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun to part shade. We suggest at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day or all-day lightly filtered sun for best flowering. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. Exceptionally drought tolerant when established. Over decades, we’ve seen no insect or disease problems and deer won’t touch it.

Note: We list Orange Tea Olive as cold hardy to USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where low winter temperatures can but rarely go down to 5 to 10F. That said, we have an Orange Tea Olive in our gardens since 2005 that survived 3F during the winter of 2013 with no problems. Based on this experience, we think the Orange Tea Olive may be cold hardy to Zone 6b, where low winter temperatures can go down to -5 to 0F. That said, if you are in Zone 6b and would like to try growing the Orange Tea Olive year round outdoors, to be on the safe side, we suggest providing protection for young plants when temperatures are forecast to drop below 10 degrees.

Bought the orange tea olive bush from Wilson’s about one month ago. It was my first order with them and I found they were one of a very few that carried this bush. I also had never ordered a live flower/bush/tree over the web and certainly I had some reservations about the quality plant that I would get plus the obvious questions surrounding shipping a live plant. I decided to go ahead and it has worked out well so far. The shipping was prompt with the plant arriving in excellent condition. The way it was packed in short had it sitting upright and being held in an upright position by a cardboard collar. No damage at all plus it was fresh and still somewhat moist upon arrival. I haven’t seen any orange blooms or fragrance yet but it’s not time for those things yet. It is green and appears healthy. I received this tree in a reasonable amount of time. The tree was packaged well and survived transport. Plant appeared to be a bit rough from the trip. It has been planted a week now . Seems to be doing ok. No complaints.

I have 6 of these around my property now. They adapted very well to So. OR growing conditions. I have found that the deer are nibbling on them a bit, but so far not enough to cause growth issue. They seem pretty fast growing and hardy. LOVE THEM! —————- WBG Reply: Hi Debbie! Thanks for the review of the Orange Tea Olive. Good to hear they adapt well to the climate there in Oregon. With 6 of these growing on your property, I bet your gardens smell great during the fall! The deer here in Georgia never touch any of the Tea Olives in our gardens. Strange how deer in different areas have different tastes. But good to hear they’re just nibbling. Maybe try some shavings of Irish Spring soap around the plants to ward off the deer. This works well in our gardens. Also search “deer” in the Advice Search found at the top of any page in our website. Tea Olives are the best smelling plants there is. A few years back as I was perusing Wilson Bros Nursery, I walked into one of their structures and was hit by this wonderful smell. I grabbed one of the helpful workers and he showed me this plant with white flowers and I bought 3. They’re pretty big by now. Then I saw the Orange Tea Olive on W.B.’s website, I had to have one. Came within 2 days, packed to the gill, not one branch or leaf broken off this beautiful healthy plant. It’s in the ground now and looking good. Can’t wait for it to bloom. We’re gonna let it grow into a tree too like the white ones. Now a shout out to Wilson Bros. I’ve been going to their nursery since they opened. They have helped me with questions, picking out plants and are very knowledgable. If they don’t know, they look it up right there and then for you. I brought in a thing that was growing in my yard. It had a sticker in the middle which you didn’t see until you stepped on it barefoot. Ouch. One of the owners riffled through a book and found what it was then picked out the weedkiller I needed to kill it. Haven’t had it crop up anymore. Right now the physical nursery is closed for renovating and it makes me sad because about tis time of the year, I like to walk around and choose what I’m gonna plant. Hope they open back up soon. Anyway, you can’t go wrong with W.B. no matter if it’s online or physical nursery.. The nearly 5′ tree arrived in good health and undamaged, as the attached photo shows. It needs to leaf out a bit, but I don’t expect to see much before next spring. The Fragrant Orange Tea Olive is hard to find. Mostly can purchase seeds online. So I was elated when I found Wilson Bros Gardens. I was very impressed with the packaging and the speedy delivery. I have not planted her in the garden yet because of Hurricane Harvey visiting and waiting to see which way Hurricane Irma is traveling. I had my tea olive plant indoors for Harvey and now on my patio. I keep her soil hydrated and she is hanging in there. I hope to get her in the soil by the latest the weekend. I think the plants are ok. I sent a picture of some leaves that had holes in them from insects? I submitted pictures to company, but never received a response? ——— RESPONSE from WBG: Hi Holly – We looked back through our email log and did not find an email from you. That doesn’t mean you didn’t send it, only that we didn’t receive it. Otherwise, we would have promptly responded as we answer all our emails same day. To your question about holes in some of the leaves having holes in them. This is a typical condition on the older leaves of Tea Olive that occurs during the winter months. When spring arrives and new leaves begin to emerge these older leaves are usually naturally shed from the plant. In any event, it’s not an indicator of poor health or an insect problem and the plant should do fine. Let us know if there’s anything else we can ever help you with.
