Description
Perhaps our favorite of the fragrant cultivars, the Fragrant Snowball Viburnum, Viburnum carlcephalum, is prized for its intoxicating, fragrant white flowers that appear in 4 to 5 inch diameter snowball shaped clusters in spring. You can grow this one as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree. To enjoy the fragrance and beautiful blooms plant this fragrant wonder near windows, patios, decks porches and other outdoor sitting and living spaces.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 6 to 10 feet tall and equally wide, the Fragrant Snowball Viburnum can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a very attractive small tree ideal for use as an eye-catching specimen or grouping in landscape and flowering shrub borders. Also useful to frame corners, accentuate entryways, or as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, white theme gardens, cut flower gardens, Viburnum gardens and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
Viburnum is very easy to grow in most any average, most but well drained soil and full sun to part shade. It prefers a loamy soil of average fertility. As with so many other ornamental plants, it does not like constantly soggy or wet conditions. Very drought tolerant when established and we’ve seen no serious pest or disease problems. Deer haven’t touched it in our gardens. For best flowering, at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day is suggested. Responds very well to pruning for shaping, size control and tree forming. Prune as needed immediately after flowering.

Ordered 3 carlcephalem viburnums for zone 6b. Fragrant snowball. Nice size…maybe 12”, healthy and not dried out. No flowers but hopefully next year. Shipping was very fast. Best to order early in week so it doesn’t sit in distribution network over the weekend. Definitely will order again.———————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the great review and the kind words! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

It’s my favorite all around shrub plant. Works well in a white garden. Early Spring bloomer and wonderfully fragrant long lasting huge blooms. Easy to grow and tolerates a wide range of soils. Endures well in sunny or shadier locations. These are hard to find and discovering Wilson Bros had them made my day. Shipped in a timely fashion and well packaged. Arrived in excellent condition.
