Description
If you’ve ever seen the giant redwood trees in California and always thought you might want to grow one in your own landscape, meet ‘Inman’s Select’, a select variety propagated from an established specimen in Inman, South Carolina. Redwoods, scientifically known as Sequoia sempervirens, are exceedingly rare outside of their normal habitat on the west coast, but this one in South Carolina has thrived there since around 1950 reaching a height of around 100 feet with a width of about 20 feet and a trunk circumference of about 12 feet. Redwood trees are fast growing when young, adding 3 to 5 feet in height per year, but growth does slow down with age. Very easy to grow, it features very soft and feathery fern-like evergreen foliage that emerges light green in spring maturing to deeper green in summer. Fissured bark is a very attractive reddish orange, which contrasts beautifully with the green leaves. A truly spectacular tree that deserves a spot in any landscape where it will grow (USDA Zones 7a-9b), and that can accommodate its size. We suggest planting it at least 30 feet away from homes and septic lines.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 70 feet or more in height and 15 to 25 feet wide over 50 years time, the Inman’s Select Redwood tree is ideal for use as a specimen where space allows. It grows much taller than it does wide but we suggest planting it at least 30 feet away from a home or septic lines. It prefers a site where the soil stays consistently damp or moist. A fine addition to conifer gardens, bird gardens and near bodies of water.
Growing Preferences
The Inman’s Select Redwood is very easy to grow in a consistently moist, humusy soil and full to mostly sun. It prefers a consistently moist soil so is a perfect choice for growing in those areas where the soil doesn’t want to dry out. Maintenance is minimal to none…just plant and watch it grow, quickly! Pruning isn’t necessary, however selective pruning for shaping is tolerated or to remove lower branches is fine. Avoid pruning in the spring when the tree is emerging from dormancy. Prune in late winter.
Plant Long & Prosper!
