Description
Bringing a sense of tranquility to the garden, and popular for its hardiness and handsome foliage, the Japanese Holly Fern grows in a vase-shaped clump of arching, dark green, shiny fronds with holly-like leaflets that are coarsely fringed on the margins. It is evergreen in milder climates (USDA Zones 8-10) and loves the shade. This is a fern that adapts well to inland or coastal environments and you can even grow it indoors has a house plant!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 18 to 24 inches tall and wide, in zones where it is evergreen, the Japanese Holly Fern is ideal for use as a groundcover in shady areas, providing a lush, tropical effect. Use it as a specimen or in small groupings in small garden spaces. Adds great texture to container plantings. Those of you above USDA Zone 7a, where this fern in not reliably winter hardy, can grow it in containers that can be overwintered indoors. Tolerance for dry air qualifies this plant for use as a houseplant.
Growing Preferences
Japanese Holly Fern is very easy to grow in most and moist, humusy, well-drained soil in part shade to full shade. Avoid the direct afternoon sun. Good soil drainage is essential to protect roots from rotting in winter. Where the fern goes dormant during winter, the crowns may be mulched with straw in winter. Tolerance for dry air qualifies this plant for use as a houseplant. It requires very little if any pruning, only to remove a damaged frond and during cleanup at the end of winter. We suggest a feeding with a mild organic fertilizer after new growth has emerged in spring and soil sulfur if needed for deep greening of foliage.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Zone 7a, where this fern variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know that it can be grown in containers which can be overwintered indoors and set back outside when temperatures warm in spring.
