Description
The Kaizuka Twisted Juniper is an extremely hardy and easy-to-grow Juniper with each individual plant having a personality of its own. Maturing on average to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide, its skyward facing branches twist and turn in all directions. When left to grow natural, with little or no pruning, it makes for an interesting and eye-catching focal point specimen, espalier (grown flat against a wall), or as a natural hedge or privacy screen. With some selective pruning it is an excellent candidate for a pom pom topiary tree. Exceptionally cold and heat hardy and drought tolerant, this one is a great choice for the gardener looking for unique, low maintenance plants!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing upright in an irregular, twisted form to 15 feet tall and 10 feet wide on average, the Kaizuka Twisted Juniper is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or in rows to form a natural hedge in sunny landscape borders. We often use it in design as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) on sunny walls in home foundation plantings. Also, an excellent candidate for pom pom and other topiary shapes and forms. A fine addition to conifer gardens, Asian theme gardens, rock gardens, topiary gardens, oddity gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs)..
Spacing: 12 feet apart for solid hedges and privacy screens; 18 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Kaizuka Twisted Juniper is exceptionally easy to grow in well-drained moist to dry soils of low to average fertility and full to mostly sun. Exceptionally low maintenance and drought tolerant when established. No pruning is ever necessary. That said, this plant can be trained into unlimited shapes and forms. A perfect candidate for pom-pom and other topiary forms.
