Description
Kyoto Super Dwarf Mondo Grass is a miniature grass-like perennial plant that features very dark green narrow blades that fold over to form a very low mat maybe 2 inches tall. Excellent for miniature gardens, as a groundcover or soil cover in container gardens, as a lawn substitute, or to fill narrow gaps between stepping stones and pavers.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a low and compact carpet 1 to 2 inches tall and up to 18 inches wide over time, Super Dwarf Mondo Grass is a perfect choice to fill gaps between stepping stones or pavers in walkways and patios. It is also ideal for use in mass plantings as a groundcover or low-maintenance lawn, or as a soil cover in container gardens. Especially nice planted beneath and around Japanese maples.
Suggested Spacing: 4 to 6 inches apart for quick fill as groundcover; 8 to 12 inches apart if you have patience

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Mondo Grass variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Super Dwarf Mondo Grass is easy to grow when planted right, and in the right spot. It adapts to most soil types and likes full shade to part shade. Morning sun is okay but foliage may fade in direct afternoon sun. All day filtered sun is okay. It prefers a well-drained slightly moist to somewhat dry soil. As with many other plants, a constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic.
