Description
The White Flowering Dogwood is an absolutely beautiful North American native flowering tree that will light up your garden in spring when it becomes covered in gorgeous, large 3 to 4 inch white flower bracts. Following the flowers are bright orange-red fruits that persist through the end of the year. Its rounded form with tiered branches are clothed in rich green leaves until fall when they put on another spectacular show transitioning to shades of rich red to purple-red. The attractive, alligator skin like bark on the trunk of more mature trees provides interest during the winter. A magnificent flowering tree that deserves a spot in every landscape where it will grow (USDA Zones 5-9). For an even more spectacular springtime show, include a Pink or Red Dogwood tree to your garden. The wonderful flower combination is an amazing sight to see!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet or more in height and equally as wide, the Native White Dogwood is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or in a staggered rows in sunny or shady landscape or woodland borders. In the South, this one will appreciate some shade or filtered sun during the afternoon. Also nice to frame the corners of homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to woodland gardens, native plant gardens, white theme gardens, perennial shade gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 25 feet or more apart for space between trees; 10-15′ or more from the home
Growing Preferences
Dogwood trees are adaptable to many soil types, preferring a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic. Though Dogwood trees will tolerate full sun, we think they look and perform best with some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons, especially in the South. Maintenance is minimal to none. Except to remove a stray or broken branch, no pruning is necessary.
