Description
Leyland Cypress has become one of the most popular evergreen privacy tree’s since it came on the scene in the 1970’s. ‘Naylor’s Blue’ Leyland Cypress grows just as fast as the species adding up to 3 feet in height per year, even in poor soils. Instead of dark green, the flattened sprays of feathery foliage on graceful pendulous branches of Naylor’s Blue is a much more attractive silver blue-green. Under ideal conditions in the West it will reach heights of over 50 feet and 20 feet or so wide. In the east you might expect around 40 feet. Although it can be sheared to control size on small lots, we think this one looks best when allowed to take on its natural, beautiful form.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright conical to pyramidal form 30 to 50 feet tall and taller in the West, and 15 to 20 feet wide, the Naylor’s Blue Leyland Cypress is ideal for use to form a quick evergreen privacy screen, where if desired it can be mixed with other evergreens to create a pleasing effect. It is also useful to frame in the corners of tall homes and other buildings or as a specimen or background anywhere in sunny landscape borders. A fine addition to conifer gardens, bird gardens, wildlife gardens, blue theme gardens and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs). Perfect for an outdoor Christmas tree!
Suggested Spacing: 8-10′ apart for hedges or screens; 22′ or more apart for space between trees
Growing Preferences
Naylor’s Blue Leyland Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average to low fertility and full to mostly sun. It is low maintenance requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally pyramidal form. That said, it responds well to shearing for size control and shaping purposes.
