Description
A favorite in our gardens, and one of the fastest growing of the variegated leaved Japanese Maples, ‘Oridono Nishiki’ can add up to 2 to 3 feet in height per year when it likes where it’s growing. A very old cultivar that puts on a show spring summer and fall with it’s variegated leaves that sometimes twist and turn in different directions. Leaves emerge painted pink, white and green in spring maturing to green and white or green for summer, then turning brilliant shades of pinkish-red to maroon in the fall. If this one is trimmed some every year in late winter or early spring the green bark will become candy-striped in pink, providing winter interest in the garden.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Orido Nishiki Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, you can plant them in groupings of three or plant one on both sides of an entryway to accentuate the entrance.
Suggested Spacing: At least 15 feet apart for space between trees
Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Click on the link below under Helpful Articles for Japanese Maple container planting instructions.
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when selecting companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Japanese Maple variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough, long-lived trees that are easy to grow in the ground or in containers.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Orido Nishiki will tolerate full sun but does its best with some shade or filtered sun in the afternoon, especially in the southern zones where it grows. You can find a complete listing of our sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties here.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.

I purchased the Japanese Maple as a gift for our daughter who had picked it out on your website. She was thrilled this week to see it budding. It had a beautiful shape!————————————We are so glad you are both pleased and we hope she enjoys it for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I was so pleased with the variegated JAPANESE MAPLE ORIDONO NISHIKI when it arrived. It was packed so expertly that literally no soil was lost from the pot. (The surface of the soil was covered in crushed damp paper and then clear wide tape covered the paper. Foolproof!)The soil was damp upon arrival and even the moss growing atop the soil was undisturbed. I should add that I have never had a disappointing shipment from Wison Bros. and everything I have ordered, whether perennials or trees, have 100% lived and thrived.
The tree was a bit more than 6 ft tall in the 5 gal pot before planting. I used the video available online as a planting guide. The tree is beautifully shaped. It is the focal point of a memorial garden for my daughter-in-law and I am very pleased with this purchase for this special garden. I can’t wait to see the spring coloration! Thank you for sending me a beautiful healthy tree for the memorial.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come!
