Description
The most heat tolerant Lilac we’ve ever grown, ‘Red Pixie’ produces loads of fragrant dark reddish purple flowers from early to mid-spring on compact rounded plants 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, making her is a great fit in smaller garden spaces where larger lilacs just won’t fit. This outstanding cultivar was selected from a group of seedlings of Syringa julianae ‘Hers’ and probably crossed with Syringa meyeri.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a compact mound 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, Red Pixie Lilac fits into smaller garden spaces than its taller growing cousins and is a perfect choice for containers. It is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a natural hedge in larger landscape and flowering shrub borders. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, cut flower gardens, butterfly gardens, cottage gardens and pink color theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for solid hedges; 8 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Plant your Red Pixie Lilac in full sun in northern zones and provide some shade or filtered sun during the hottest part of summer afternoons in Zone 7. Likes a moist but well-drained soil with pH close to neutral. Add pelletized lime if your soil is extremely acid. Fertilize once, in early spring, with a light application of an organic plant food or slow-release shrub & tree fertilizer. Prune as necessary after bloom in spring.
