Special Attributes

Exceptionally cold hardy to -30 degrees F and deliciously fragrant, ‘Rosy Lights’ is an outstanding selection from the Northern Lights series that produces stunning, large, pom pom-like clusters of brilliant deep rosy pink flowers. We’re not absolutely sure but this selection may be grown in Zone 3 with some protection. The plant itself has a rounded spreading habit 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide over time. Plant this magnificent beauty near windows or close to patios, decks and other outdoor living spaces where the flowers and wonderful fragrance can be enjoyed.

Northern Lights azaleas were bred by the University of Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to be very hardy and to have flower buds that can withstand temperatures of -30 to -45 degrees F.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 6 to 8 feet tall and equally as wide, Rosy Lights Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen or in groupings in woodland borders or other areas of the landscape that provide part shade and moist but well-drained soils rich in organic matter. A fine addition to fragrance gardens, pink theme gardens, Azalea gardens, woodland gardens and cottage gardens.

Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for natural hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 4a, where this azalea variety is not winter hardy, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.

Cultural Preferences

Rosy Lights Azalea is very easy to grow in moist but well-drained, humus rich soil and dappled shade or morning sun with afternoon shade. Once established has good drought tolerance. Deciduous azaleas are very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is growing way outside the natural form of the plant, but not so much that it would destroy this beautiful shrub.

I live in zone 5 and bought four of these azaleas because their cold hardiness was rated to zone 4. I plan to plant them around and under large Norway spruce trees.
