Description
Every variety in the Magic Crape Myrtle Series series was selected for its ability to produce a profusion of flower clusters in rich, true colors…and with its abundant, large clusters of ruffled, glowing red flowers in summer Ruffled Red Magic doesn’t disappoint! Deadheading spent flowers often prolongs the bloom season well into fall. The dark glossy green foliage on this upright but compact Crape Myrtle to 10 feet tall provides a wonderful backdrop for the gorgeous flowers. A very vigorous grower with excellent resistance to powdery mildew.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing to 10 to 12 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide, the Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle is an ideal selection for smaller garden spaces and in containers. It can be grown as a shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive and colorful small tree that serves well as a focal point specimen or accent in sunny landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Also makes a very colorful hedge and is spectacular in groupings. Whether planted as a specimen or in groupings, this is one crape that is sure to stand out in the landscape!
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Crape Myrtle variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and as much sun as you can give it. For best flowering 6 hours or more of direct sunlight is suggested. Constantly soggy or wet soil is problematic. Has shown excellent resistance to powdery mildew and is quite drought tolerant when established.

In renovating an old garden here in Asheville, NC this summer, I have included a number of plants from your nursery. Your inventory includes so many varieties of plants that are hard to find elsewhere—“old fashioned” varieties that are needed for an old garden. Plus, I have been very impressed with the health of the plants we’ve received and the quality of your shipping! All of your plants seem to be happy as clams here.—————————————————–Hope you enjoy it for years to come. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. 🙂 – Beth | WBG

Plant was shipped on time in excellent condition with no damages. I planted it back in early summer and it bloomed for a long time. Took the advice and snipped off the spent flowers and the tree is still blooming in September. Probably my favorite crape myrtle of all. I highly recommend Wilson Bros for their excellent quality and service and as a source for accurate information. ——————- WBG Reply: Hi Mark – Thanks so much for your review of the Ruffled Red Magic Crape Myrtle and we hope you enjoy it for years to come.
