Description
Noted for its dwarf mounding habit and brilliant year round foliage, Scarletta Fetterbush is a beautiful and natural woodland plant that will set your shade garden on fire! In spring, striking scarlet-purple new leaves emerge that turn to a deep lustrous green in summer finally turning bronze-red during fall and winter. This beauty typically grows to only 2 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide in 10 years, making it a perfect choice for smaller garden spaces and containers. An excellent companion to azaleas, rhododendrons, aucubas, mahonias, hostas, dogwoods, anise and other shade-loving plants.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in a dense mound to 1.5 to 2 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, Scarletta Leucothoe is deal for use as specimen in smaller landscape spaces or in groupings, as a border or in mass plantings in large, shaded to partly shaded areas. Also excellent for pots, planters and other containers. A fine addition to woodland gardens and borders and looks especially nice around boulders and garden ponds.
Suggested Spacing: 2 to 3 feet apart for solid hedges; 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Leucothoe is not winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Scarletta Leucothoe is very easy to grow in organically rich, moist but well-drained soils and part shade. For best overall performance we recommend some shade in the afternoon. Maintenance is minimal except for a snipping here or there of a stray branch.

I bought two really good quality plants with 2 gallon size root balls growing in two gallon size pots. Box and plants arrived in pristine condition. I needed needle nosed pliers to pull out enough staples to pry the plants loose from their shipping container but didn’t loose a leaf in the process. I would have been more comfortable buying these plants from a grower in Oregon rather than in Georgia because they are just barely hardy enough to grow successfully in Chicago but I’m going to plant them in a sheltered alcove and hope for a mild first winter in zone 5————————————————–Thanks for the kind words and awesome review! We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

This plant should be better known to gardeners. New growth is fire engine red, slowly turns to burgundy come summer which only deepens to a richer burgundy in the fall. It grows only two feet tall and makes a great ground cover for moist shade. The deer leave it alone. The plants arrived in good condition, ready to grow. I’ve grown it at my former house and it has become one of my favorite garden plants. I wouldn’t be without it.—————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Of course, all Leucothoes are beautiful shrubs. I was highly impressed by the health and the manner in which my shrub was delivered. I mail-ordered many plants and shrubs from different nurseries this fall; your specimen was the pick of the litter.. Well Done!———————————————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I purchased 2 leucothoe plants to replace 2 that had died in new landscaping around my house. They arrived in excellent condition, and shortly after being planted in the ground they were making new leaves. I plan to order more.————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
We ordered more, after buying nine last year. Quality, packing, shipping are first-rate. Our landscape designer specified multiple plants that, although native to our area, are not available at our local nurseries. Wilson Bros has fantastic selection so we don’t have to settle for substitutes. We keep coming back!——————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Hello!
This is the first order I’ve placed with you. My plant came today, in perfect shape, and the pot was still moist. I definitely will be ordering from you again.

We were unable to find these at our local nursery or home improvement store and we searched all over the internet, finally finding them at Wilson Bros. We liked the reviews by others as well as the information about the brothers and how they have grown the business. It was also great that they are located in nearby Georgia. So we ordered 4 of these. We were impressed in that they arrived by FedEx only 2 days after placing the order. We were impressed again by the packaging. The plants were well watered and had some type of paper wrapped around the top of the pot and sealed with packing tape. This insured that the plants would stay moist for a long time. In addition, the cardboard box was fashioned in a way to really protect the plants in shipment. All of the plants were extremely healthy looking, better than what we’ve seen locally. We got them in the ground about 2 weeks ago and they look great and are doing well. We were so impressed that we have since placed 2 other orders for 2 different plants. This was after getting suggestions from Lauren who’s been a great help. These plants also arrived healthy looking and in great shape. They are also thriving. We just can’t say enough good things about Wilson Bros. They are now our go to nursery for all of our plant needs. And Lauren is a great resource. We love Wilson Bros.!!!———————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come!
