Description
An exceptionally attractive and fast-growing Hinoki Cypress, ‘Southern Lace’ sports some of the most soft and lacy foliage of any conifer we grow. It has an open-branched, narrow pyramidal form with gracefully arching branchlets that are sure to please the eye when used as a focal point specimen, in groupings, or in privacy screen plantings. Though some websites list Southern Lace as “slow growing,” we’ve seen it add 12-24 inches or more a year in height…super-fast for a Hinoki Cypress!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet in height and 6 to 8 feet wide at the base, the Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress ideal for use as a focal point specimen, to frame the corners of tall homes and other structures, in groupings, or arranged in single or staggered rows to form a very attractive privacy screen or buffer. Also suitable for growing in large containers and a fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens, and Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).
Suggested Spacing: 6 to 7 feet apart for privacy screens; 16 or more feet apart for space between trees
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Cypress tree is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. That said, it will need a well-lit indoor location and will need to be transplanted to the landscape when it becomes to large to grow in a container.
Growing Preferences
The Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to part sun. It is exceptionally low maintenance, requiring little if any pruning to keep its naturally narrow, pyramidal form.

I’m VERY Happy with the packaging and shipping of these trees. I bought 2 of the Southern Lace Hinoki Cypress trees. They were tall and came in long boxes and are truly beautiful trees. I was concerned because the delivery took longer for them and their pot soil was a little dry when they got here but they seem okay. Haven’t yet planted them. Am giving them a couple of days to recover before planting them, but am so pleased with their look and I really hope they do well in my yard! ——————— WBG Reply: Hi Theresa – Thanks so much your your review of the Southern lace Hinoki Cypress trees and all the compliments! I bought this cypress tree a couple of weeks ago. It is exactly as described. It was shipped perfectly and in soil with a pot included. The tree is great, however the customer service from Wilson Brothers was phenomenal. They have a great staff, are very attentive, and are just all around an A+ bunch of folks. We are doing our backyard and front yard this summer, and I will buy all of my Landscaping from them. They are just that good. ——————– WBG Reply: Hi Jen – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review.
