Description
Need a tall privacy screen but have limited space to work with? The Spartan Juniper might just be your plant. A very tough but handsome plant, and no trimming or pruning needed to keep its dense form. Spartan grows quite fast (up to 18 inches a year) and has an upright, narrow columnar growth habit that tapers toward the top. Guess you could say it has a shape much like the Washington Monument. It’s a handsome evergreen conifer with beautiful, dark mint green foliage year round with no winter discoloration and the texture is very similar to that of Torulosa Juniper, though with a slightly softer feel to the foliage.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing up to 15 feet tall with a narrow width to only 3 to 4 feet, the Spartan Juniper is ideal for use as a privacy screen or hedge where space is limited. Also effective to fill narrow spaces in home foundation plantings or as a specimen anywhere in the sunny landscape. A fine addition to conifer gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs).
Spacing: 3′ for solid hedges and privacy screens; 8′ or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
As with most other conifers, Spartan prefers a well-drained soil and as much sun as you can give it. It is exceptionally drought tolerant and low maintenance. No pruning is necessary, however can be trained into spiral and poodle tier topiary. We’ve seen no notable insect or disease problems and deer don’t like it.
