Description
Cultivated in Japan in 1710, ‘Tamukeyama’ is one of the oldest Japanese maple varieties and has stood the test of time for good reason. It is hands down our favorite and is recognized by professionals and Japanese maple enthusiasts worldwide as one of the most beautiful and durable weeping lace-leaf Japanese maple cultivars in existence. Tamukeyama is a very fast grower to 6 to 8 feet tall and 8 to 10 feed wide in 10 years or so. During spring and summer, its gracefully cascading branches are covered in finely dissected, deep burgundy-red leaves that resist sun scorch and hold their color throughout the season better than most other varieties. The foliage turns a brilliant scarlet color in fall. When left to grow naturally the branches will cascade to the ground however lower branches can be removed to form a magnificent small tree.
Landscape & Garden Uses
To showcase its magnificence and beauty, the Tamukeyama Japanese Maple is best used in the landscape as a focal point specimen to draw attention to a specific area of the home or landscape. That said, Japanese Maples are often used to accentuate entryways by planting one on both sides of an entrance, or spaced widely in small clusters of three. Crimson Queen is an ideal selection for landscape beds or in a larger sized container.
Spacing: 14 feet or more apart for space between plants
Container culture can extend the useful range of Japanese Maples. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai. Click on the link below under Helpful Articles for Japanese Maple container planting instructions.
Note: One Japanese Maple can make a landscape…that is, if you don’t overcrowd it with other trees and plants. Therefore, when choosing companions to plant under or around your Japanese Maple, make sure to select low-growing shrubs or groundcovers that won’t interfere at all with your tree.
Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 5a, where this Japanese Maple variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Though delicate looking, Japanese Maples are actually very tough and long-lived trees. They are very easy to grow. Container culture can extend their useful range. They are extremely easy to grow in containers, a practice taken to its most extreme form in the art of bonsai.
In their natural habitat, Japanese Maples are understory trees, growing in dappled forest sunlight at the edges of woodlands. Ideally they prefer to be grown in similar conditions. That said, there are many sun-tolerant Japanese Maple varieties, of which Tamukeyama is one.
Most any average garden soil will grow Japanese Maples. They prefer a moist but well-drained soil rich in organic matter. As with so many other ornamental plants and trees, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant your Japanese Maple in a well-drained site.

I received a beautiful dwarf Tamukeyama Japanese maple a few weeks ago, along with 3 camellias rated to zone 6. The plants all looked fabulous–except the maple had fared sadly during shipment and had numerous broken branches. With a quick email and a few pictures, Wilson Brothers quickly dispatched another tree. This one arrived in perfect condition. They even told me to go ahead and keep and plant the damaged one, after explaining what to do to make it “better.” I have been nurturing them in a three season porch, awaiting the moment to plant all of my order at our last frost date. Following the instructions for keeping them in-pot until then (available on this site, I believe) they have been perfectly happy; very strong and healthy. I am confident they will live and grow for many years to come; thank you!!!——————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! I did a lot of research on Japanese maples in order to choose the right variety for my yard, climate, and the look I was after. I found Wilson Bros on an internet search and took a chance by ordering my tree sight unseen. I was pleasantly surprised when my tree arrived so quickly and was in beautiful condition. I found the same tree at a nearby nursery for over $100 more. I have no more regrets for ordering with Wilson Bros. I’m so excited to see how my tree thrives.——————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

Yesterday 2 plants were delivered. Ordering on line, I was concerned as to what would arrive. When I opened the boxes I was delighted to see both trees. I am more than pleased! I purchased a 5 gallon Tamukeyama Dwarf Red Japanese Maple and a 3 gallon crimson Queen Dwarf Japanese Maple. They are both beautiful. Now I will learn as much as I can as to their proper care. I did go on line to find this tree because ,being in the Deep South, I could not find anyone here that sold it. I will admit I was very sceptical about paying that much and getting a tree like the one described. The tree came when expected and was packaged perfectly to preserve the branches. It was taller than expected and very healthy. I would definitely purchase from the Wilson Brothers again. —————– WBG Reply: Hi Sheryl – Thanks so much for the review and sharing your experience with us and future visitors to Wilson Bros Gardens. Well branched and not a dead or broken branch on it. I was worried about how a delicate tree like a Japanese maple would do in shipping. The staples that go through the box into the container is ingenious! It held the tree in place during shipping. Strongly recommend this nursey to others looking for high quality plants.
My tree arrived in perfect condition. Very nice!
I have been looking for a Tamukeyama for a while and was thrilled to find one on Wilson Bros. Gardens. The tree came packaged very carefully and was a very nice full specimen
