Description

An unrivaled foliage and flower color factory spring through fall, the Rising Sun is hands down our favorite of all the Redbud varieties we have growing in our gardens. The incredible color show starts in spring when clusters of bright purple, pea-like flowers cover the branches. Just as the flowers begin to fade you’ll notice the emergence of vivid apricot new leaves that quickly turn to an eye-catching bright golden-yellow, then to chartreuse and finally to a medium green. The orange new leaves continue to come throughout the spring and early summer for a multi-color effect that will blow your socks off! The fastest growing redbud. By mid-summer the leaves turn to light and medium green and then finally to a vivid bright yellow in fall.

We’ve had The Rising Sun Redbud growing in our own gardens since 2013 and it has demonstrated excellent heat and sun tolerance, drought tolerance, heavy periods of rainfall, you name it…this tree has thrived through everything our north-central Georgia climate has thrown at it.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and wide, the Rising Sun Redbud is ideal for use as a focal point specimen or in groupings in sunny or shady landscape or woodland borders. Also nice to frame the corners of tall homes and to provide beauty and some shade around patios, porches and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to yellow or orange theme gardens and sunny or partially shaded woodlands

Suggested Spacing: 20 feet or more for space between trees

Growing Preferences

The Rising Sun Redbud tree is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or shade. We haven’t grown this one in a lot of shade so not sure if shade has an effect on the foliage color? The tree in our gardens receives about 6 hours of direct sunlight from late morning to late afternoon and puts on a spectacular color show. Standing water or constantly soggy or wet soils are problematic.

We now have 6 Rising Sun Redbuds. They are very Hardy, my definition. I call Hardy, anything that can survive the 114 degrees, for weeks, here, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Big heart shaped leaves, ranging from beige, to dark green and yellow, bring a smile to my face. They really compliment a garden. And, if that’s not enough, their flowers in early spring are a brilliant pink, even covering the tree limbs. As usual, Wilson Brothers, sent us beautiful plants. I ordered the “Rising Sun” redbud in a 5-gallon pot after reading on the Wilson Bros website that “this has become our favorite redbud”…reading that, I was sold. The tree arrived quickly and was VERY carefully packed to avoid damage in transit. In addition, the rootball & pot were topped with moist paper & then wrapped in plastic to keep the rootball moist. After unpacking though, I noticed that 3 large branches had been pruned near the middle-to-top of the tree canopy. I called the Wilson Bros telephone & described the above. The employee I spoke with was initially as puzzled as I was, but then when she asked how tall the tree was (6 feet), we both realized why the branches had to be pruned…In order to fit into the shipping box, those longer branches had to be pruned. Doing that was clearly better than trying to bend longer branches into the shipping box. I was VERY impressed with the helpfulness & knowledge of the lady with whom I spoke, and despite the pruning, also VERY impressed with the quality of the tree & my whole experience at Wilson Bros. THe tree arrived within a couple of days in excellent condition. It was larger than I expected (similar to the 15 gal one at the local nursery). 4/5 stars. The tree had full leaves and was further along than other trees I have purchased from other online vendors this spring. Unfortunately, we had a series of near freezing and windy days about a week after I had received and planted the tree. All of the leaves have withered and most have fallen off. Hoping to see signs of new growth soon, if not I’ll try again next year since these trees seem to be hard to find.——————————————————Hopefully it will bounce back and be just fine. I had reached out to find out the height of the 5 gallon plant and would the tree be in bud, I was answered promptly. Placed an order and it arrived within days. It was packaged really well and wasn’t dried out from transport. It had a few leaves and a bunch of buds.
It is planted and leafing out like crazy. Once in the ground, it is taller than me 5′ 8″. Ordered this tree in advance of my spring planting. 5 gal pot tree is a good size and the packaging was the best of any plant I have ever ordered online. Tree looks healthy, but since it’s deciduous and it’s still “winter”, the jury remains out. It’s currently in my garage waiting for the ground to thaw 🙂

I love purchasing trees from Wilson Bros and Gardens. They have very healthy trees and the packaging is thorough. I never have to worry about my orders, which is a good thing! The tree arrived, well packaged, and with some leaves (which I was expecting) because it’s fall after all. The leaves have since fallen, and I’ve chosen not to plant the tree yet. I’m not sure about planting it in November where I live. That said, I have the tree well protected and I am looking forward to spring for the new buds and then the leaves themselves. I own three different Red Bud trees and I am expecting that this one will be my favorite. I’m also eyeing a few more Red Bud trees for my 5 acres. I had bought a Rising Sun Redbud from another online retailer and it was the worst tree I’ve ever seen. It was also smaller and more expensive than what I got here.
I actually called the nursery before ordering to ask about the different sizes. Very friendly and helpful service. I went with the 5 gallon size. It’s about five feet tall and came very well packaged and not dried out at all. Very nice specimen. My only gripe would be that it didn’t come secured to a bamboo stake. So, I had to buy one and do that myself.——————————–So sorry you had to buy a stake, usually if the tree has a strong enough trunk, we don’t stake them.
