Description
No need for chemicals on this exceptionally disease resistant and low maintenance rose that anyone can grow! Therese Bugnet is a vigorous and floriferous hybrid rugosa rose that from late spring to frost produces abundant and beautiful fragrant double blooms with lilac-pink ruffled petals that resemble gorgeous old-fashioned roses. The blooms stand out nicely against the greyish blue-green leaves that clothe the 5 to 6 foot tall and wide rounded shrub. In our north-central gardens, Therese Bugnet starts blooming in May and repeats through early winter, at which time the leaves drop to expose attractive red canes.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and wide, the Therese Bunet Rose is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings or as a colorful hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders and home foundation plantings. This rose is so reliable and attractive throughout the season we have no problem suggesting it for use in home foundation plantings. A fine addition to rose gardens, cottage gardens and pink theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for hedges; 10 feet apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
When planted right and in the right spot, the Therese Bugnet Rose is exceptionally easy to grow in average, moist but well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. As with all other roses, to avoid powdery mildew, morning sun is a must to dry dew from the leaves. Afternoon shade or filtered sun is fine. We suggest 6 hours of direct sun light for best flowering.
Maintenance is minimal. Therese Bugnet Rose does not require pruning however will benefit from it. Unlike Knock Out Roses and many other types of modern shrub roses, avoid cutting the plant low in late winter. Reason being, There Bugnet’s first round of blooms in spring are produced from buds that formed during the previous season (on old wood). So, instead, in late winter or early spring cut out only any stems old enough that their bark has transitioned from rosy-red to tan or brown. After the first bloom cycle the plants can be pruned some for shaping purposes. Deadheading spent flowers through the season is not necessary however will encourage new buds and flowers.
