Description
Sure to be a conversation piece in your landscape and as a floral display in your home, the White Pussy Willow is a large growing deciduous shrub or small tree that produces upward-facing, fuzzy 1-inch catkins up and down all the bare branches in late winter. The buds resemble a cats paw. The cut branches with buds are excellent for displaying in indoor cut flower arrangements. The white buds open to yellow, bottlebrush-like flowers that are one of the first pollen and nectar sources for pollinating insects. As the flowers fade dark green broad elliptic to oblong leaves up to 6 inches long will emerge and remain until the first heavy frost in fall.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 20 to 25 feet tall and 15 to 20 feet wide, the White Pussy Willow can be grown naturally as a large shrub or lower branches can be removed to form a small to mid-size tree that is ideal for use as a beautiful specimen or in groupings along borders. A fine addition to cut flower gardens, pollination gardens, and cottage gardens.
Growing Preferences
White Pussy Willow is exceptionally easy to grow. It is adaptable to most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full to most sun. Light shade is tolerated. Does not require pruning, however responds well to it for shaping purposes. Prune immediately after flowering.
