Description
Zhuzhou is one of if not the tallest and fastest growing of the Loropetalums making it one of the best for use as tall hedges or privacy screens or an outstanding single or multi trunk tree. Also known as the Chinese Fringe Tree, the handsome deep burgundy-purple foliage of ZhuZhou is an excellent contrast and background for the hot fuchsia-pink fringe-like flowers that are produced in abundance during late winter and early spring and sporadically in fall. The leaves on this selection are arrow shape and longer than on other Loropetalum varieties.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 8 to 15 feet tall and equally as wide depending on pruning, the Zhuzhou Loropetalum can be grown as a large shrub or small tree. As a shrub it is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural of clipped formal hedge or privacy screen. As this Loropetalum grows taller, lower branches can be removed to form a small evergreen tree that serves for use as a colorful focal point specimen in landscape borders and home foundations. Also a good candidate for espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) and for various topiary shapes and forms such as pyramid, pom pom, poodle tier and standards (single trunk tree). Its low water needs makes it a good candidate for use in Xeriscape plantings. The purplish-red foliage contrasts nicely with plants that have yellow, light green, grey or other light colored foliage or flowers. A fine addition to pink or purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 8 feet apart for solid hedge or privacy screen; 18 feet or more apart for space between plants

Note: For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 7a, where this Loropetalum variety is not reliably winter hardy, you’ll be happy to know it can be grown in containers that can be brought indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring. Requires a well-lit space for overwintering indoors.
Growing Preferences
Zhuzhou Loropetalum is very easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soil can be problematic. So make sure to plant in a well-drained site. Established plants are exceptionally drought tolerant, requiring little if any supplemental irrigation. Foliage is more dense and flowering heavier in full sun however light shade is tolerated. Requires no pruning, however responds very well to almost any amount, which makes it an excellent choice for hedges, topiary, and espalier.

This was my first order from Wilson Bros but definitely not my last. The order was filled promptly and I receive the plant in better shape than I would have gotten if I had went to the Nursery and picked it up myself. It is very well packed. Wilson Bros also has one of the best selections of plants with good care information. Since I just got the plant I can’t tell how it performs yet, that is a review for a later date. If you do have any questions at all they get back to you very quickly.———————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! The plant was well grown, it filled the pot and was in excellent condition. Wilson Bros. does an excellent job packing. I had previously ordered the same variety and size from a boxstore. It arrived smashed and most roots dead. With Wilson I have found you get what you pay for, and you get it right away.————————————————–We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Both of the above orders arrived today in great shape. Well packed and prompt shipping. You should have an easier way for customers to provide feedback when an order has arrived at the customer’s location. They are still in their pots, but have begun to open up and I noticed the flower buds appearing. I will probably plant them in the next 2 weeks. We are still in the dry season, but have seen some rain recently. Can’t wait to see what they look like come late summer.————————————We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy them for years to come! Thanks for the great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG
I ordered a loropetalum tree and couldn’t be more pleased. The tree arrived in excellent condition. Unfortunately the weather turned much colder before I could get it planted and I was concerned it might die. I called Wilson Bros and they gave me instructions as to what to do. Knowledgeable customer service.
I’m very pleased overall and will be ordering again.—————————————————-We are so glad you are pleased and we hope you enjoy it for years to come! Thanks for the kind words and great review! 🙂 Beth Steele | WBG

This bush came a very nice size. Exactly what I have come to expect from Wilson Bros. It looks healthy and well formed. So pleased to get this! It arrived well-packed and healthy (despite the shipper taking 6 days to deliver it!) I had one of the trees at my former residence and had been unsuccessful in finding one for my current home until now! Anxious to watch it grow!————————————We are so glad you are pleased with your purchase! Thanks for the great review! Beth | WBG 🙂

Arrived in very good shape.
This is our first purchase of this plant. It is a bushy little shrub that we are going to prune into a tree form. We just got it, so will see how it does in our growing conditions and into its first year. ———————– WBG Reply: Hi Debbie! Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Zhuzhou Loropetalum. As one of if not the fastest and tallest growing Loropetalum varieties you shouldn’t have to wait too long to start removing lower branches to form the tree. Ideal conditions are a well-drained acidic soil and full sun to part shade. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight is best. We hope you enjoy this beauty for years to come!

Fast service. The plant was well packed and delivered on time. Plant very healthy, nicely shaped and had a large, healthy root ball. Very pleased with the service and quality of plants. Now I am on the wait list for two more of the same! ———————- WBG Reply: Hi Jeff – Thanks so much for taking the time to provide your review of the Zhuzhou Loropetalum. We should have a new crop that’ll be ready to ship soon though they may not match the size and shape of the ones you received. Nothing a little pruning wouldn’t fix, and they’ll all end up the same shape as they mature:-) These are in limited supply and there’s quite a few folks are on the Waiting List so make sure when you get the notification for when they’re available to grab a couple of them quickly. Let us know if there’s ever anything else we can help you with. We’re at your service! – Brent | Wilson Bros Gardens
